Studio Courses and Culinary Workshops
A participant practices Renaissance painting techniques at a past studio course
Enjoy instruction in a variety of media related to the Museum's permanent collection and current exhibitions. Designed for adults of all levels of expertise (unless otherwise specified), studio courses and culinary workshops are taught by artists, Museum educators, and related professionals. Registration is required for all courses.

The Getty Center and The Getty Villa

Hands-on studio activities guided by practicing artists focus on contemporary and historic materials and techniques related to art on view at Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Programs range from introductory to master classes offered in both single and multisession format.

Event Highlight
Drawing from the Old Masters: Drapery, the Art of Hiding and Revealing
Wednesday, August 18, 2010,
1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
Getty Center, Museum Studios
Course fee $35 (includes materials); open to 25 participants

Educator Zhenya Gershman explores the dynamics and mechanics of drawing drapery. Participants examine original works of art and participate in guided drawing exercises to discover how Old Masters depicted realistic and compelling drapery in their portraits. Complements the exhibition From Line to Light: Renaissance Drawing in Florence and Venice.

The Getty Center and The Getty Villa

Chefs, Museum educators, and wine experts lead classes and hands-on cooking workshops providing a unique entree to the Museum's permanent collections and special exhibitions. All experience levels welcome. Course fee varies.

Leonardo's Renaissance Table

Getty Center
Leonardo da Vinci was an early animal rights advocate and a promoter of vegetable eating, a contrast to the meat-eating practices of his time. Participants discovered the art and food of 16th-century Italy, while exploring texts on food and diet written by Leonardo and his contemporaries, then cooked and enjoyed a vegetarian meal based on historic recipes. Complemented the exhibition Leonardo and the Art of Sculpture: Innovation and Invention.

Getty Drawing Hour
The Getty Center

Enjoy the tradition of sketching from original works of art every first and third Sunday of the month during the Getty Drawing Hour. An artist provides general guidance; all you need to bring is drawing pads and pencils. All experience levels welcome. Free. Sign-up begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Museum Information Desk.

Drawing from Antiquity
The Getty Villa

Landscapes of classical antiquity have influenced artists for centuries. Be inspired by your environs and bring a sketchbook to Drawing from Antiquity at the Getty Villa. Artist Peter Zokosky guides a lesson and critique on the first and fourth Saturdays; participants work independently on remaining Saturdays. A different theme is chosen each month. All skill levels welcome! Bring sketchbooks, pencils, and kneaded erasers. Course fee $65 per month.
